The Bosu

The Bosu

If you are a gym member, you probably have seen a strange looking blue thing that has the shape of a ball, but is cut in half and has a flat surface. This thing is called a Bosu and can make work outs more fun, interesting and challenging.

If you have been working out and are getting bored with your routines, try introducing the Bosu into your workout routine to keep it fresh. Using a Bosu can help you burn more calories, increase strength, get toned, inherit better balance, and open up hundreds of new ways (maybe even thousands) to workout.

So you go to the gym and have been doing standing dumbbell curls for the last two months and almost dread doing it at this point. If you’re ready to feel excited about working out again then incorporate a Bosu in with the dumbbell curls. You can do this by standing on the Bosu (flat side on the floor) while you do the curls. The easiest way to use it (in this case) is standing on it with both feet. You will immediately notice the difference and after doing one set will feel refreshed and maybe even a bit shocked as to how dramatic of a change one simple piece of equipment can make. As a result of doing this, you are not only working your biceps, but also working your core and lower body in order to stabilize yourself.

Thinking of some new ideas for a cardio workout? Use the Bosu to do step-ups with rather then using a bench or some other solid surface. You are still doing step ups, but now have to work on your balance as too. Another quick variation of this is doing side-steps on the Bosu. Again this will get your heart rate up and improve your balance and coordination.

There are lot’s of different things you can do with the Bosu so take advantage of using this in your workouts and get creative. Have a good workout and be safe.

Endorphins – Do you know the benefits of this natural body producing miracle?

October 7, 2008

Let’s go straight into it. . .

Endorphins are one of the many amazing miracles the body can produce. You may not even be aware of it, but when you are exercising, your body is releasing this “drug” that makes you feel a heck-of-a lot better mentally and physically afterwards. So what is this “drug”? Let’s dissect it a bit:

The word “Endorphin” comes from the two words, “endogenous + morphine.” Endorphins are small, protein molecules that are produced by cells in your nervous system and other parts of your body. An important role of endorphins is to work with sedative receptors that are known to relieve common pain. These drug-producing receptors are located in your brain, spinal cord, and other nerve endings. Endorphins come in several forms, and can be anywhere from eighteen to five hundred times as powerful as any man-made drug. Did I mention that endorphins are non-addictive too?

Because of this, the effects from the release of endorphins is all pros and no cons. It has been shown to control consistent pain, cravings for chocolate, potentially addictive substances, and feelings of stress/frustration. In addition to these beneficial “side effects”, endorphins can regulate the production of growth and sex hormones and reduce symptoms associated with eating disorders.

If you are looking to get high legally,  then this is the way too go (and of coarse, it’s free). There are many ways to feel the endorphins take effect. It could be as easy as laughing or seeing the chiropractor for an adjustment. You get the drift? BUT if you REALLY want to feel the endorphins go full-speed ahead, then go do some exercise. Running, weight training, swimming, etc. are all great. You can get creative with your workouts and find something that suits you.

The next time you have that day where you want to throw the copy machine out the window, go hit the gym or do some cardiovascular exercise. Feeling the urge to have an “adult-beverage”? Try going to see a comedy show for some laughs instead. The more times you get into the habit of releasing those miracle endorphins rather then going out for a Whopper or downing some beers, the easier it will be to suppress those urges to sabotage your body. You will feel more mentally tough, and physically stronger in many ways. Keep this in mind the next time you think you could use this “drug” and give it a shot (not like a syringe, but I’m sure you already knew what I meant by that).

Do your body a favor and treat it with respect. If you can do that, the rewards will be endless and keep on giving back. Hope all is well to whoever is reading this.

Exercise – your new best friend

September 30, 2008

Do you look/feel like this? Theres a cure for it. . .

Do you look/feel like this? There's a cure for it. . .

In these crazy and unstable times, there are very few things we can count on to feel secure and better. When things start falling apart, one of the first things we generally do is go talk to a friend or try to escape what’s going on. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder to find someone that can listen and help you out since everyone has their own full plate. We can’t always count on the people or things that make us feel better.

There is one friend though that will never judge you, have no baggage, will always listen too you, and will know exactly how too make you feel better. That my friend is exercise. Whether it’s hitting the weights at the gym, going for a jog, surfing, or any other type of activity where you are moving your body and pushing yourself in a healthy way, it will ALWAYS give you a great dose of what you need and make you feel a whole lot better.

So the next time things aren’t working out the way you want them too and your usual support system isn’t available, meet your new best friend. It can be free (unless you belong too a gym), it will help you forget what’s going on, it will boost your confidence and self-esteem, it will re-energize you, and never turn it’s back on you. . . EVER. Give this new “friend” a chance. It could end up being one of your closest friends and will change your life.

P.S. If your feeling blue right now, try introducing yourself to your new potential “friend”. You have nothing too loose and everything too gain. I know you can do it.

There’s STILL no substitute to a fitness program

August 4, 2008

There was a time when there wasn’t a nationwide epidemic of obesity, and most people didn’t have to be too concerned about their health and size. These were the times when T.V’s, computers, and other luxury’s we have today didn’t exist. Without thinking about it, health and fitness was a natural part of life for most households. After school or during the summer, the neighborhood kids would all get together and run around and play with the other. In addition too this, there weren’t Starbucks Coffee stores around every block and the U.S was not flooded with fast food chains. Eating three meals a day with snacks in between was a regular part of life and most of the meals were home cooked with everyone sitting at the dinner table at the same time. This in addition to these facts, lot’s of people walked everywhere, rode bicycles, and would participate in sports or other activities.

So where did it all go?

Our lifestyles have been turned inside-out and we have been forced to adapt to the current living that has been accepted as part of our daily routine. Most households now own a computer, a T.V, and some type of entertainment such as a video game system. As a result, we no longer have to work as hard for the things we want and don’t realize the consequences that come with the choices we make. People will look for any excuse to trick themselves into thinking that they are helping themselves out and that they don’t have to work hard to have good health.

So what does this all mean? It means that if you wanted to loose weight (for example), and you had the choice between using your Nintendo Wii Fit, or hiring a great personal trainer that will put you on a custom program for you to get the fastest results in the shortest amount of time, which would you choose? The majority of the readers will choose the Wii because it’s more fun, it’s exciting, and seems easy enough for any one too do. Now, if I asked you which you think you would get better results from, which do you think you would choose?

Here’s another one for you. . . You wake up early in the morning to get ready to go to work. Lately the thought of you wanting to finally get that 6 pack has been poking at you and summer is now here. Then you grab your breakfast and bucket full of coffee and park on the sofa and turn on the T.V. When you turn on the T.V, you see an infomercial advertising their product called “The two minute ab shock and dock”. It tells you that all you have to do is sit in this special chair where you “dock” your body into it like you would an ipod and wrap a belt around your waist that will “shock” the fat, giving you “shocking” results and 6 pack abs. While you’re watching this, they have a guy or girl demonstrating the product for two minutes while they where a s*!t eating grin and try to make it look easy. You decide to call and make the three “easy” payments of $199 and when you get the product in the mail and start using it, you end up having hair that stands straight up from the electrical current running through you and no six pack abs.

Do you want to change your lifestyle and get healthier? If you do, the truth is that there is no easy way to get in shape and get healthy. You will have to work for it, but with a little guidance, education, and the right fitness program, you can get these results that will be life changing. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is? Well, in the health and fitness world, this applies. There is no quick fix and if your looking for it, you’re not going to get it so stay away from all the quick-fix schemes and make a commitment to go to the gym or hire a personal trainer that knows their stuff. There are only positive outcomes that you get from exercising. You may sleep better, have more energy, feel more alert, you will live longer, you will think more positively, you will decrease possible injuries and decrease (or maybe even get rid of) the common lower back pains and neck pains, and the list goes on and on and on. If you want to stand out from the rest and see how much your life can change in optimistic ways, then take some action and find a personal trainer to show you how to do things the RIGHT way and get you moving forward in the right direction. This doesn’t just apply to people who are obese. ANYONE can benefit from a personal trainer, even the people who live a healthy lifestyle and have a regular fitness program. There is always room for improvement. So raise the bar, take a stand, and prove to the people around you in your life that you are living proof that people can make positive changes in their life.

Keep it real,
